«I wanted to make the breakaway in the morning, but I didn't manage it. This first stage was difficult in the middle. Clément Venturini and I took advantage of that to attack. A large group caught up with us, including some of the favourites. Then it was a battle of strength with the peloton, and we held on. I felt good physically, so I tried to attack at the kilometre mark, which put me in a good position for the final sprint and allowed me to take second place. It's a good result for the period ahead.»
